Fintech is one of the most exciting areas of tech innovation, but educational opportunities are limited to the country’s tech and finance hubs. Only 150 total fintech degree programs are offered at US colleges and universities, meaning opportunities to study fintech locally may be limited. By analyzing our data on US fintech degree programs, we found that:

  • Five states are responsible for 60% of all fintech degree programs (Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York).
  • Southern states offer the most fintech degree programs, with the Northeast close behind. The two regions are responsible for 75% of the nation’s fintech programs.
  • California is responsible for nearly half of all west coast fintech degrees.

How have certain states established themselves as national leaders in fintech education? By creating talent development initiatives. For example, Georgia launched the Georgia Fintech Academy in 2019 to create a talented, diverse fintech workforce. Twenty schools from the state’s university system participate and have trained over 3,000 fintech students. And there’s no shortage of opportunities for academy graduates, as local companies are working to make Atlanta the top destination for fintech talent.

Students will find most fintech degree programs closely tied to recognized finance and tech hubs like California and New York. And there’s good reason for this, as colleges and universities work closely with major companies in their area to design programs that prepare students for the fintech positions available to graduates.
